Sierra Leone's Refugee All Stars frontman Reuben KoromaWhat a thrill to have Reuben Koroma in the studio this week. As founding member and lead singer of Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars, Reuben and his bandmates have gone from playing acoustic guitar in a Guinean refugee camp to performing in front of enraptured audiences of tens of thousands at New York’s Central Park SummerStage, Japan’s Fuji Rock Festival and the Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival. Four albums and a documentary later, and after multiple world tours, an appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, a song on the Blood Diamond film soundtrack, recording with producers Steve Berlin and Ticklah for the Cumbancha record label, etc., Reuben and the Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars crew are poised to continue their creative and life-affirming journey right here in the DMV. Reuben currently resides at Cataway, a fascinating new wellness and community space operating out of rural Maryland, with weekend bus service from Takoma Park and DC pick-up locations. Peep the website below for information on festivals and events at Cataway so you can get out of town, get connected to the land and share a bonfire jam with world-class musicians. We sat down with Reuben and Cataway’s Sebi Medina-Tayac to talk about all this and much, much more, including a sneak peak at one of Reuben’s songs-in-progress live in the studio. Check it out!
