Ras Ziah Ayubu is the lead singer, composer and rhythm guitarist for DC’s premier roots rasta crew Proverbs Reggae Band. Born and raised on the island of St. Vincent in the Grenadines, Ras Ziah has been making conscious music for decades at home, in NYC and since 2000 in Washington DC.

We chatted about Ziah’s songwriting and recording process, music as a platform to engage with the troubles of our day, and the challenge of keeping the many demands of life in the States in balance with the need to create. Ziah also graced us with two live-in-the-studio performances of original tunes “The Youth an Dem a Cry” [7:38] & “Power Play” [14:43]

Ras Ziah Ayubu co-hosts 89.3fm WPFW’s “The Kulcha Shak” with Kim Bey and Content Johnson every Saturday 4-6pm (www.wpfwfm.org), using music to bridge the cultural and generation gap between African and the diaspora. Have a listen below and check out the links to follow the band and The Kulcha Shak.
