Munit Mesfin is a DC-based Ethiopian singer/songwriter whose music is a refreshing synthesis of Ethiopian roots and the global perspective of having been raised around the world. Munit performed for many years with German guitarist Jorg in an Ethio-soul acoustic duo that was unique on the Addis scene. They recorded two albums and toured in Africa, Europe and the US before parting ways to pursue other projects.
Since joining the music world during the Ethiopian Millennium, Munit has performed with some of Ethiopia’s top Ethio-jazz musicians and shared the stage with some of Ethiopia’s most popular artists, including Aster Aweke, Teddy Afro and Tewodros Taddesse. She has also performed many shows in the US with Grammy nominated artist, Wayna Wondwossen and looks forward to more collaborations in the future!
In addition to her own musical pursuits, Munit has been a radio host with 105.3 AfroFM, a judge with Balageru Idol, a musical director with Girl Effect’s Yegna, and an event organizer and MC. Now after raising three beautiful children, she is ready to give her full attention and energy to her first solo album with many of her musical friends and heroes on the project!
Munit’s style is jazzy and soulful, in English and Amharic, and her sets are often filled with Ethiopian classics and originals that she improvises from song to song and set to set. Her upcoming solo album will feature Ethiopian flavors and instruments folded in with global grooves and rhythms. It will be in Amharic and English, with lyrics that uplift and leave you feeling good and empowered to move your mind, body and soul!
We discussed all this and more with Munit and were treated to three, lovely in-studio performances, accompanied by guitar dynamo Cristian Perez using a looper pedal. We can’t wait to hear more from Munit (coming soon!), and definitely look for the video we shot in an upcoming Jolly Papa TV segment.
