Kola Ogunkoya is a Nigerian saxophonist, composer, band leader and original gbedu master, recently relocated to the DC area. We talked about his early days in Lagos playing with legends like Victor Olaiya, Eddy Okonta, Jambos Express and eventually working with Fela Kuti. Kola and his 15-piece Afro jazz Ensemble, which includes female dancers, has performed all over the globe, including a successful US tour in 1996. On return to Nigeria he opened a cultural club for Art and Music in Opebi, Allen, Lagos. After some double-dealing by his investors and the murder of his brother in front of the club, Kola returned to the USA, where he gained citizenship and continues to record and perform prodigiously.
