Massama Dogo is a Togolese musician, songwriter, bandleader and old friend who has been making African music in the DC area for 20+ years. His group Elikeh features a more pan-Afro sound, incorporating Afrobeat, Highlife, Funk, Rap, Reggae and more. They have been tearing up festivals and clubs in the region for years. His newer group Dogo From Togo brings the sound closer to Massama’s home and heart in the rolling rhythms and vocal cadences of Togo and its West African neighbors.

While Elikeh is still going strong, this new project won the 2019 Washington Area Music Award (Wammie) for “Best World Music Artist/Group,” a much-deserved recognition of Massama’s songwriting, perseverance and vision. Our interview touched on both projects, as well as the challenges of leading a band in the US and much more. Massama also performed two original songs live in the studio with just his mellow tenor voice and acoustic guitar. It’s a rare treat to hear him in such an intimate setting, so check it out and hit up the links to find the next show in the DMV!
