Downtown Holiday Market (acoustic set)
DC Highlife Stars brings together some of the best musicians on the DC African music scene for live performances of classic highlife, rumba, afrobeat, funk, reggae and other styles, mixed with originals and tunes from the new generation of afrobeats artists.
At the center of this project are Michael Shereikis and Eme Awa, both bandleaders (Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band & Eme and Heteru, respectively), and co-hosts of the Jolly Papa weekly radio program on WOWD-lp, 94.3fm, Takoma Radio. They have assembled a rotating cast of world-class musicians working in the DC area, and the party they create is infectious! Whether in an intimate acoustic setting or with a full band for clubs or festivals, a joyful vibe is always front-and-center. This is dance music!
DC Highlife Stars is a veritable jukebox of funky music from greats like Bobby Benson, Rex Lawson, Sam Mangwana, Fela Kuti, Flavour, Tekno, Bob Marley, The Funkees, Sweet Breeze, Joseph Kabasele and more.
Members of DC Highlife Stars hail from Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, Haiti, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Mali, Cote d’Ivoire and parts between. With new collaborations popping up all the time, Eme and Michael keep things grounded and maintain the repertoire with their vocal harmonies and rhythm guitar, while the all-star crew shines.
Recent shows have featured legendary radio broadcaster Georges Collinet, Congolese vocal master Samba Mapangala, Cameroonian star Armand Ntep and Malian griot Cheick Hamala Diabate. More collaborations with featured artists are in the works. Stay tuned!
DC Highlife Stars is featured on five tracks from “The Legend,” Jolly Papa’s debut album released in January 2017. This includes a signature rendition of highlife classic “Taxi Driver” by Bobby Benson and two tracks co-written with guitarist and composer Tanash.
