DC-based Haitian guitarist & composer Fan Fan joined us for the interview this week, offering listeners a peek at his upcoming solo album fusing Haitian roots with the dizzying array of musical elements Fan Fan has absorbed over decades of musical journeying. We talked about his early days as founding member of Boukman Eksperyans and how they started out simultaneously learning their instruments and working from Haitian tradition to create a new, danceable roots sound. The global success of Boukman launched Fan Fan on a decades-long career in music that has been defined by exploration, hard work and fearlessness. He is an accomplished guitarist in a wide range of styles but always finds himself in whatever music he’s playing. As he says in the interview, he comes to himself “uninvited.”
Fan Fan brought a few unreleased tracks for us to sample, and while there were some technical issues (skipping, etc.), it was really great to taste this new gumbo he’s cooking up. Fan Fan was our very first guest on the show way back in July 2016, and it was great to learn more about where he’s heading these days. That’s the DC community; always working, always connecting.
