Joe Brotherton

joebrotherton2Had a lovely sit down with Joe Brotherton, one of the top trumpet players on the DC scene and as versatile a musician as you’ll ever meet. Joe started life in Nashville, but developed his profound love for music and in particular the trumpet at the prestigious Pinellas County Center for the Arts in St. Petersburg, FL. After college in Indiana, Joe served four years in the U.S. Marine Corps as a trumpet player, leaving as an E-5 Sergeant with a Navy Achievement and a National Service Medal. He then moved to Washington, DC to continue studying with renowned artists and pursuing a career as a free-lance musician. Fresh off a tour of Morocco, Joe is currently enjoying a very busy life performing everything from jazz, “lead” trumpet, R&B, salsa, gospel, sectional work, studio, fusion to classical, and giving instructional lessons to all age groups.

We chatted about all that and more, and played three original tracks, one live, one work in progress and one film score piece. To hear Joe in full blow, you can catch him leading his eponymous quintet every Wednseday at Jojo’s on U Street in DC.
